Trump Administration Hard On China

If you don’t already know, the Chinese government is the worst. They represent the absolute nightmare of a freedom loving American. Their policies are oppressive and we have good evidence that they routinely use slave labor. I’m not talking about the kind of slave labor that college kids talk about when describing their job at Starbucks. I’m talking about actual slave labor. I’m talking about internment and re-education camps where over one million Uighur Muslims are being used as forced labor. The Chinese government denies these claims, obviously, but if you have been paying attention at all in the last few years you will at least peripherally have heard about these concentration camps. If you don’t believe me, here is a link to a video which shows bound and blindfolded Uighurs being loaded onto train cars in Xinjiang province by Chinese authorities. If that is not enough to make you sick to your stomach then I don’t know what is.

Good News and Bad News

So if watching that video made you angry or sad well I have some news for you. Let’s start with the bad news first and get that out of the way. The incoming Biden administration most likely does not care about this. If we learned anything from Hunter Biden’s laptop it’s that the Biden family is deeply in bed with Chinese and other foreign interest groups. There was no hard evidence of anything illegal being done by Joe Biden himself, but Joe Biden has been a part of the establishment for 47 years. He has worked closely with corporate lobbyists in this country and has openly stated that he wants to work with China. So that’s the bad news, the worse news is that his administration has pledged to undo everything that the Trump administration has done. So we are going to be jumping right back into bed with a country that uses actual slave labor. Well the good news is that the Trump administration is using these final weeks of his presidency to make it as difficult as possible for Joe Biden to cozy back up to the Chinese Communist Party. On Wednesday the Trump administration, through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, placed a ban on cotton and cotton products that come from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) which is one of the largest producers of cotton in China. This ban was put in place due to the evidence that the XPCC uses slave labor from these Uighur Muslims in order to produce its cotton and cotton products. This claim is backed by the United Nations which states that it has received credible reports that these prisoners have been put to work. This follows a ban from the treasury department on all dollar transactions with the company. So as we can see the Trump administration is doing everything it can to break the insidious ties that the United States has with China. I for one am ok with paying a little more for clothing if I can have some assurance that it wasn’t made with forced labor. People have long complained about Chinese sweat shop labor but very few people actually do anything about it. It’s a difficult thing to do, there are fewer and fewer products every year that don’t come from China. Buying American is almost seen as a cliché at this point. You can expect that trend to continue under the Biden administration, we had a brief four year blip where it seemed we might be able to break ourselves away. Alas it was not to be, the United States is headed right back to the status quo, more lobbyists in government, more wars, more debt to China. Donald Trump was not perfect by any means, he appointed Oil and Coal lobbyists to head up the environmental protection agency, a strange decision by anyone’s measure. His first two years in office looked like more of the same old same old. However I believe that his hard line stance on China was the right one. China is not our friend. China is an enemy of freedom loving people everywhere, and we shouldn’t ignore that simply because we can get a T-Shirt for a dollar.
